Surgical BioModels
Overview

BioModels provide an imaging modality; that is, a visual and tactile means by which a surgeon can make a diagnosis and suggest a procedure. This use is similar to that of an X-ray, except the model is a three-dimensional, tangible representation based on spatially accurate data.

BioModels can assist with the diagnosis of the condition, allow precise planning of the sequence of surgery and can be sterilised and used intraoperatively as a surgical navigation tool. Since surgeons can rehearse incisions, create drill guides, measure grafts, and fit surgical resections before they operate, theatre and surgery time can be reduced. Other benefits include shortened exposure to anaesthetics for patients and decreased blood loss. Research performed in Australia, Europe and North America has validated the benefits of surgical BioModels.

In a study published in The Journal of Cranio-maxillofacial Surgery,
- 82% of surgeons claimed BioModels significantly improved planning
- 95% of surgeons claimed BioModels significantly improved diagnosis
- operating theatre time was reduced by an average of 45mins/operation
- 88% of patients suggested that the BioModels were helpful for informed consent

In an ongoing European multi-centre study assessing the application of stereo-lithographic models in craniomaxillofacial surgery;
- 31% of the surgeons believed that the surgical result was unachievable without the BioModel
- 78% of surgeons claimed the outcome was either ‘better’ or ‘much better’
